Photograph of The Lawrence House

The Lawrence House

This photograph, taken at the turn of the century, shows Mr. and Mrs. David S. Lawrence. Mr. Lawrence was a carpenter in Ashe county, North Carolina and, like many people in the mountains, he found a way to embellish and expand a log dwelling. For the main part of the building, he used logs that were taken from an abandoned school. The house was then enlarged with framed-in rooms, and completely covered over with weatherboarding.

This photograph, taken in 1986 prior to dismantling, reveals the log part of the home. The exterior wall in this exhibit was part of an added room; the house dates to about 1890.
