When Were They Made?

Some kinds of objects clearly reveal their usage but did not change much in appearance over time. For that reason such objects are difficult to date when they are removed from their sites of discovery.

We Know When They Were Made, But What Were They Used For?

Other objects are mysteries to scholars. Their periods of manufacture are known because of other archaeological evidence, but their usages are matters of speculation. Even their names, "cones" and "birdstones," derived from they way these objects look to modern eyes, reflect this uncertainty.
