These tall --- often up to five feet --- herbaceous perennials can be found growing in rich moist woods in the mountains and Piedmont. In May-June they produce branching, long, thin, finger-like clusters of white flowers. These plants are dioecious: individuals produce either "male" or staminate flowers, or "female" or pistillate flowers. The staminate plants are the more showy.
