When flowering, these herbaceous perennials are 4-8 feet tall. The white flowers are borne in long clusters and racemes up to 3 feet long. The flowers open from the bottom of the cluster upward, and thus may be in bloom for as long as 2 weeks. The large compound leaves are divided into toothed leaflets. The common name, cohosh, comes from "co hosh," the Algonquian word for "rough". It refers to the black rhizome, which is rough to the touch. These plants grow in rich woods in the mountains and the piedmont.
