These plants grow 2-4 feet tall. The compound leaves with three toothed leaflets are alternate. The flowers, which bloom from May to July, have five narrow, slightly twisted white petals.

The bark of the root was used by the Native Americans as a laxative. It grows in rich woods in the mountain and piedmont.
