These plants are dioecious, which means one plant bears either all male (staminate) flowers or all female (pistillate) flowers; i.e., the plants are either "male" or "female". These flowers are borne in a wand-like cluster; the staminate clusters are more showy and conspicuous. In a typical population, there are generally more staminate than pistillate plants. Fairy Wands are found in deciduous woods throughout the state.
