This relative of Rhododendrons and Azaleas appears to be an epiparasite. Since it has no chlorophyll, it is unable to manufacture its own food through photosynthesis. It is dependent on trees such as pine to produce food. But it does not grow directly on the tree roots. Instead, its roots are associated with a fungus that is connected to the root system of the tree. Food manufactured by the tree is then passed through the fungus to the Indian Pipe.
The genus name, Monotropa, means "one turn". This refers to the fact that as the plant develops, the flower is first turned downward and after pollination it turns up, remaining in that position as the capsule and seed mature.
