Here are some Appalachia-related links you might want to look at. THE W.L. EURY APPALACHIAN COLLECTION. Located on the second floor of Belk Library at Appalachian State University, the Appalachian Collection has more than 26,000 volumes of books and over 200 periodical subscriptions, with special strengths in the social sciences, regional history, folklore, music, religion, genealogy, fiction, and African and Native Appalachia. The Appalachian Collection also includes: hundreds of maps, 2300+ audiotapes, 850+ videotapes and films, 2800+ records and CDs, 1930 Census and Soundex for all North Carolina Counties, slides, CD-ROM's, photographs, and ephemera, and a song title index is regularly updated from songs received in any audio format into the Collection. NOW & THEN. Published three times a year by the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, Now & Then tells the story of Appalachia, the mountain region that extends from northern Mississippi to southern New York state. It presents a fresh, revealing picture of life in Appalachia, past and present, with engaging articles, personal essays, fiction, poetry, and photography. BOONE WEATHER Dr. Ray Russell, former Chairman of the Computer Science Department at Appalachian State University, has developed a comprehensive site with weather information and predictions for Boone that are often more accurate than the Weather Service's. WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION The mission of the Western North Carolina Historical Association is to educate the public by promoting the preservation of regional history through the care and interpretation of the Smith-McDowell House Museum and gardens; the collection, care, and exhibition of artifacts that tell the story of the mountain region; the presentation of public programs; and the facilitation of cooperation among regional historical organizations. ANDRE MICHAUX SOCIETY Andre Michaux was one of the most prolific botanists ever, and also one of the most unappreciated. He came to the U.S. from France in the late 1700s and explored throughout the Eastern seaboard, focusing especially on the Appalachian Mountains in the Carolinas. He wrote the first book on flora of North America, and is credited with discovering almost 300 species of plants in the Carolinas alone, including some that are in the ACM's wildflower garden. ARCHIVES OF APPALACHIA from East Tennesee State University. This site has an enormous amount of information on reference materials on Appalachia. BLUE RIDGE COUNTRY MAGAZINE A great magazine about the Blue Ridge Mountain. Great information on travel, history, and recreation. SOUTHERN FESTIVALS Check out current calander listings of festivals, fairs, special places and events in North Carolina and Georgia. THE MOONLIT ROAD Stories from the American South on the paranormal. You can read stories in text version, or use RealAudio or Shockwave software to hear an audio version by a Southern storyteller. Downloads of RealAudio and Shockwave are available at the site. JOHN C. CAMPBELL FOLK SCHOOL in Brasstown, North Carolina offers over 450 week long and weekend long classes covering traditional and contemporary crafts, music, dance, photography, storytelling, etc. You can look over class offerings and order a catalog from the website. THE SWANNANOA GATHERING at Warren Wilson College Asheville, NC offers week-long workshops throughout the summer on music and dance. NATIONAL PARK SERVICE Great page on all of the national parks. You can visit the Blue Ridge Parkway from this site. ThingsToDo is a good site to look at if you want to find something to do in the North Carolina mountains after you've visited the Cultural Museum. APPALACHIAN TRAIL HOMEPAGE Visit the homepage of one of best hiking trails in North America. The Appalachian Trail runs from Katahdin, Maine to Springer Mountain, Georgia for a total of 2159 miles. About 200 hikers complete the entire trail each year. Page contains state-by-state summaries, FAQ on hiking, photos, and club information. HIGH COUNTRY DANCERS Are you coming to the High Country and looking for something to do in the evening? Why not check into Contra Dancing? This site lists local dances at the Red Barn in Valle Crucis and at the American Legion hall in Blowing Rock, and other dances in the region. NASCAR.COM Did you know that NASCAR racing got its start in the Appalachians from the running of Moonshine? Visit the nascar.com page to check out drivers, teams, and tracks (North Wilkesboro Speedway is just down the road from Boone). CHEROKEE NATION HOMEPAGE The first settlers in the Appalachians are believed to be the Cherokee, dated as arriving in the area about 15,000 years ago. The Cherokee Nation homepage has important dates in Cherokee history. DOC WATSON HOMEPAGE Visit the site at University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill of the legendary Doc Watson. Doc has been a great influence for many guitar players. He lives right in Deep Gap, North Carolina, which is just down the road from the Museum. He is a great guy. Visit the page for sound samples, bio, and concert schedules. You may also want to check out MerleFest, an annual music festival in Wilkesboro, NC honoring Doc's son, Merle, who died in a tractor accident in 1985.
