Mountain Music

Alex Hooker, an accomplished musician and apprentice instrument maker, has an extensive background in the Appalachian region. He is currently teaching "Appalachian String Music" at Appalachian State University. In his fascinating program, Alex introduces participants to the evolution of old-time mountain music. He provides an overview of various types of instruments that were common in the region --- dulcimer, fiddle, jaw harp, banjo, and to a lesser extent, the guitar and mandolin --- and how those instruments shaped the musical traditions of Appalachia. Alex provides a comprehensive history of each instrument as he plays. A special aspect of the program is the opportunity to learn some flatfoot dance steps and to dance to his fiddle playing! The program will be tailored to the age level of the class.
