Give Me That Old-Time Mountain Music

Picture of Nancy Collins

Professional storyteller and old-time musician, Big Stone Gap, Virginia, native Nancy Collins believes the music of her foreparents should be fully experienced with the ears, eyes, hands, feet, and heart. This second cousin ("twice removed, on my mama's side") of Mother Maybelle Carter plays her Grandaddy Honeycutt's fiddle (rattlesnake rattle still inside), a fretless groundhog-hide banjo, autoharp, guitar, and a wormy chestnut dulcimer crafted from old family barnboards, all the time sharing the stories behind both the instruments and the old songs. Students of all ages are encouraged to join in the making of a joyful noise with spoons, bones, shakers made from natural materials, washboards, and all manner of do-it-yourself instruments.

Nancy comes to the Museum with an extensive background in public school education. She also holds a Master's degree in Appalachian Studies. She can design her programs to supplement your curriculum however you request. Nancy's program is offered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9:00 am to 10:00 am or after 1:00 pm.

Cost: $75.00
