Spinning and Weaving

Jane Coffey Campbell comes to the Museum family with a heritage rich in mountain traditions. She says, "Being raised on a farm, I have seen many changes from farming with horses to farming by only a few families. Seeing families leaving their farms has made me aware of how precious the 'old ways' are and how fast they are being lost." Jane's first contact with weaving came as a child. Over the last 15 years she has worked with children at museums, heritage days, fairs, and in classrooms. Jane's program features a look at the Colonial period when nearly everything was handmade. Dressed in period costume, she shows students traditional weaving, spinning, and dyeing. Participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at spinning and actually throw the shuttle on a loom. The program will be tailored to the age level of the class.
