The Letter

"My dear Sister,
I must begin by offering my apologies for not having written sooner, but these past weeks since the accident have been difficult ones for me. The truth of it is, I seem able to do little more than put one foot in front of the other. It is like I am walking through a dark underpass, an endless corridor of pain.
My grief, however, pales to that of the child who seems utterly devastated by the death of her father. She says very little to any of us - she just lies there in the shadows. When I look at her in such distress, it literally breaks my heart. It would be a help to both of us if you could come, if only for a few days.
                 Affectionately, N."
